It’s True Love

Easter, we say, is the time when Jesus showed his true love by dying for us, but it’s unfortunate we’ve learnt so little by this huge act of love which was showed to us as a people.

Many go on social media to teach others how to love. We get it so wrong most times when it comes to the topic of love. I’m not only referring to intimate relationships of couples, but relationships in every sphere of life.

Jesus didn’t die for us by showing us a token of his love; he showed us his love by dying for us. There is a major difference here. You see, I’ve come to believe that love cannot be taught. It can only be shown, acted, or demonstrated. This is why I stay away from commenting on relationships; because you can’t teach a couple how to have a good marriage, you can’t teach people how to love. They can only learn by being shown.

Jesus spoke so much about love when he taught on earth. He may as well have left it there and went to heaven. I mean, he had given us all the instructions as far as having “true love” was concerned, but yet he still did the most important thing of all, He died and acted out the love he had spoken so much about. Paul says we were still his enemies when he did this. He didn’t wait till we accepted our wrong before he died, he died, and then waited (is still waiting) for us to accept how wrong we are. That single act explained more about love than any word he ever spoke while alive.

Acting out love will always go further than speaking out love. Anyone can say “I love you”, not everyone can show it. Anyone can speak about love, not everyone can show it.

In my opinion, Easter is the greatest time of the year. It is greater than Christmas. Because you see, if Jesus came and didn’t die, there would have been no redemption. All we would have had was more laws, but nothing to save us (the blood did all that). This was the purpose of his coming; to show us love. Easter isn’t just a symbol of hope; it’s the strongest symbol of love.

Easter is never deserved. Never will we, in a thousand years, deserve the drama of Easter. We become hypocrites when we recognise Easter, but can’t really be at peace with others and love freely. Carry all the green palm leaves you want to celebrate Palm Sunday (even wear them on your body if you wish), do all the religious rituals known in the book, true recognition of Easter will only come when we take this love which we’ve been graciously given, and show it to the world.

The world should be able to see Jesus through our lives. Many have been hurt by so-called Christians or even the church, they weren’t representing Jesus in a way he would have been proud of. Jesus hasn’t hurt you and wouldn’t. Talk to a stranger on your commute and genuinely ask how they’re doing, call someone who won’t be expecting your call, do something special for someone who won’t be expecting it, don’t just do it this Easter, make it a habit.
